Description

Peace is fragile - especially when it depends on getting a quarter of a million humans and aliens to share a single space station. Created by J. Michael Straczynski and conceived as a five-year novel for television, "Babylon 5" is set on a massive diplomatic outpost built in the aftermath of a devastating war between Earth and the Minbari. It's humanity's last, best hope for peace, a neutral meeting ground where ambassadors, traders and travelers from across the galaxy come together - and where old grudges, secret alliances and ancient powers collide. Command of the station passes from Commander Jeffrey Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) to Captain John Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner), whose personal quest to learn what happened to his late wife, Anna, draws him toward the mysterious world of Z'ha'dum - one of the show's many nods to Tolkien. He's joined by a memorable ensemble, including tough second-in-command Susan Ivanova (Claudia Christian), security chief Michael Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle) and wise Minbari ambassador Delenn (Mira Furlan). Among the show's most celebrated characters are rival ambassadors Londo Mollari (Peter Jurasik) and G'Kar (Andreas Katsulas), whose bitter feud between the Centauri and Narn becomes one of television's most powerful and tragic stories. Over five seasons, political intrigue gives way to galactic war as the ancient, enigmatic Vorlons and the sinister Shadows re-emerge. The Narn-Centauri conflict escalates to devastating effect, and characters are pushed to their limits by grief, loyalty and ambition. Standout episodes include "The Coming of Shadows," which won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation over "Apollo 13," "Toy Story" and "12 Monkeys"; "And Now for a Word," which follows a TV news crew through a day on the station; and "Comes the Inquisitor," a haunting examination of Sheridan's character. Revelations about why the Minbari surrendered on the brink of victory, a shocking secret about the Vorlon ambassador Kosh and the introduction of the mysterious Technomages all add layers to a richly plotted saga. Ambitious, intelligent and ahead of its time, "Babylon 5" helped pave the way for serialized storytelling in science fiction television, and its groundbreaking computer-generated effects set a new standard for the genre. Its influence can still be felt today. Some stories take years to tell. This one was worth every moment.
