When Hawaii's Favorite Hardwood Goes Full Send. Most builders use koa as an accent - a top here, a headstock veneer there, just enough to say they used it. Ron Thorn looked at that restraint and decided the whole guitar deserved the same treatment. Body, neck, fretboard inlays, matching appointments throughout: this SoCal S/S-004 is koa nearly all the way down.

That decision matters more than it sounds. Koa sits tonally between mahogany's warmth and maple's brightness, delivering midrange complexity with a top-end sparkle that develops character as the wood ages. Chambering the body opens things further, adding acoustic resonance you can feel through your ribcage before the amp ever enters the conversation.

The bent top represents serious construction skill - forming figured koa into a curved surface without cracking that spectacular grain requires patience most shops won't invest. Thorn's reputation was built on exactly this kind of work, which is why Fender eventually hired him to run their Custom Shop Masterbuilt program.

African Blackwood for the fretboard provides a dense, oily playing surface that feels closer to ebony than rosewood, offering serious note articulation to balance the koa's inherent warmth. Those koa fretboard inlays continue the material theme while the tortoise binding frames everything without competing for attention.

Dual single-coils keep the electronics elegantly simple. Master volume, master tone, pickup selector - nothing standing between your hands and the sound. That configuration lets the wood do most of the talking, which is exactly the point when your body and neck cost more than most complete guitars.

The Thorn one-piece tremolo and 25.5-inch scale round out a build that photographs well but genuinely underperforms in pictures. Some instruments need to be held.
