Synopsis

Every era of change brings both promise and injustice, and how people respond to both shapes the country that follows. Milos Forman's "Ragtime," adapted from E.L. Doctorow's best-selling novel, weaves together the lives of a well-to-do New Rochelle family and the headline-grabbing scandals of turn-of-the-century America, from the murder of architect Stanford White to the notoriety of showgirl Evelyn Nesbit (Elizabeth McGovern). At its heart is Coalhouse Walker Jr. (Howard E. Rollins Jr.), a proud Black ragtime pianist whose demand for justice after racist firemen vandalize his prized Model T sets off a dramatic standoff. Mary Steenburgen, Mandy Patinkin and Brad Dourif co-star, and James Cagney makes his final screen appearance as New York's police commissioner. With a lovely score by Randy Newman, it earned eight Oscar nominations.
