Synopsis
Losing your mojo can knock even the most confident man off his game, and getting it back may require a trip through time. Jay Roach's "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," written by Mike Myers and Michael McCullers, opens with a spoof of the "Star Wars" crawl and brings back Myers as the swinging superspy, whose newlywed bliss comes to an abrupt end when he discovers his bride was a robot all along. Celebrating his return to single life, Austin dances through his hotel in the buff, cleverly concealed by every conveniently placed object. Meanwhile, Dr. Evil (also Myers) returns from space and travels back to 1969 in a time machine, where his hulking, repulsive Scottish henchman, also played by Myers, steals Austin's mojo, the source of his irresistible sex appeal, from the frozen spy. Without it, Austin is hopeless with the ladies, so he hops into a psychedelic time-traveling car, follows Evil to the Swinging Sixties to reclaim his mojo and races to stop Evil's scheme to destroy Washington with a laser on the moon. Teaming up with sexy, fearless CIA agent Felicity Shagwell (Heather Graham), who uses her charms to plant a tracking device on the henchman, Austin battles a gallery of villains, including Dr. Evil's pint-sized clone, Mini-Me (Verne Troyer), who becomes the apple of Evil's eye, much to the dismay of his long-suffering son, Scott (Seth Green), and a seductive Russian agent (Kristen Johnston). Rob Lowe does a dead-on impression of a young Robert Wagner as Evil's right-hand man, Tim Robbins plays the U.S. president, Elizabeth Hurley makes a brief appearance and Evil even makes a memorable trip to "The Jerry Springer Show." Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello pop up to serenade the lovers, and Madonna's "Beautiful Stranger" became a hit. It was an even bigger hit than the first film and earned an Oscar nomination for its makeup.
