Synopsis
Discipline is what the principal wants to teach, but the real lessons in rebellion come with a loud guitar and a thumping beat. Allan Arkush's "Rock 'n' Roll High School" stars P.J. Soles as Riff Randell, the ultimate Ramones fan and a free-spirited student at Vince Lombardi High, who dreams of giving her songs to the band's lead singer, Joey Ramone. Standing in her way is Miss Togar (Mary Woronov), the school's tyrannical new principal, determined to stamp out rock music for good. When she finally confronts the four mop-topped, leather-jacketed members of America's first and most famous punk band, it isn't long before their jackhammer riffs are blasting over the school's public address system at full volume, the students are running wild through the halls without passes and Togar's fortress is renamed "Rock 'n' Roll High School." Then, true to the gleefully destructive spirit of punk, the students and the Ramones blow the whole place to smithereens, a crowd-pleasing climax that combines the apocalyptic ending of Michelangelo Antonioni's "Zabriskie Point" with the explosive energy of Alice Cooper's "School's Out." It's a blast, a goofy, liberating salute to the rebellious teen rock movies of the 1950s, which always pitted kids' hunger for fun against adults' fear-driven rules. Dey Young, Clint Howard and Vince Van Patten co-star. The film embodies both the playful, tongue-in-cheek humor of the low-budget youth pictures churned out by legendary producer Roger Corman, who launched many a young filmmaker's career, including those who made this one, and the raw, anarchic energy of 1970s punk, as personified by the one-of-a-kind Ramones.
