Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

Life moves fast, and sometimes the smartest thing you can do is take a day to actually enjoy it. John Hughes' "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" stars Matthew Broderick as Ferris, a charming, quick-witted suburban Chicago high school senior who fakes an illness to skip school, chatting directly with the audience along the way. He's so good at it that he hacks into the school's computer to lower his absence record and rigs his bedroom with a mannequin and recorded sound effects, and soon the whole school is raising money to "Save Ferris." His parents think he's an angel, but his sister, Jeanie (Jennifer Grey), is furious that he always gets away with it. Ferris persuades his anxious, hypochondriac best friend, Cameron (Alan Ruck), to borrow his father's prized vintage Ferrari, and they spring Ferris' girlfriend, Sloane (Mia Sara), from class. The trio hit downtown Chicago, taking in the view from the top of the Sears Tower, a Cubs game, the Art Institute and a fancy restaurant, where Ferris talks his way into a table by posing as the city's "Sausage King," and a parade, where he leads a crowd in "Twist and Shout." Meanwhile, the obsessive principal, Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), is determined to catch him, leading to a series of humiliating mishaps at the Bueller home. But the day also brings Cameron to a turning point, as he finally faces his fear of his distant, demanding father, with dramatic consequences for the Ferrari. Ben Stein is unforgettable as a droning teacher taking roll, and Charlie Sheen makes a memorable appearance as a teenager Jeanie meets at the police station. It all ends in a frantic race home before Ferris' parents arrive.
