Synopsis
High school can feel like the whole world, a place where every small triumph and embarrassment seems enormous. Amy Heckerling's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," her directing debut, is a true modern cult classic. First-time screenwriter Cameron Crowe went undercover as a student at a Southern California high school and returned with an honest, funny account of teenage life, adapted from his own book, and created some of the most memorable characters in movie history. They're all here, from shy freshman Stacy (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and her worldly best friend, Linda (Phoebe Cates), to Stacy's older brother, Brad (Judge Reinhold), an ambitious senior whose fast-food career keeps hitting snags. Then there's the unforgettable Jeff Spicoli (Sean Penn), the ultimate laid-back surfer dude, locked in a battle of wills with his stern history teacher, Mr. Hand (Ray Walston), who famously confronts him for ordering a pizza to class. Add early appearances by Nicolas Cage, Anthony Edwards, Eric Stoltz and Forest Whitaker, and the cast is unbeatable. With all this talent, no wonder it's as fresh, honest and funny as it was a generation ago. It's Awesome! Totally Awesome!
